How do you make a sand sculpture?
By the creation of a sand sculpture we use wooden forms. In these forms we put sand, we mix this sand with enough water and compact this. We do this in several layers. When a form is completely filled. We start the next form and fill this again with sand etc, etc.
When all the forms are filled or when we reach the appropriate height, we start to take the top form away. We sculpt this layer and when the work is done we take away the next form. We continue doing this till all the forms are gone. What remains is a sand sculpture that carries itself and only exist of sand and water.
Is it only sand and water?
Yes , a sand sculpture only exist of sand and water. There is absolutely nothing in or mixed though the sand.
Is rain bad for a sand sculpture?
No, rain is not bad for a sculpture. The sand is really hard compacted. So it can withstand the rain. Only when it rain really hard, there is the possibility that we lose the details in the sculpture. When it rain, the sculptors often go for a cup of coffee. Inside of course.
Can I learn to create a sand sculpture?.
Yes, anyone can learn this. Time, patience and dedication are important. Like the saying: Practise makes perfect.
What kind of tool do you use?
For the creation of a sand sculpture we use different kind of tools. This can be anything. Spoons, masonry tools, knives, pastry knives, brushes, straws to levels. Every sculptor has his own set of favourite tools.
Can you make everything out of sand?
We can almost make everything out of sand. You have to realise that sand is a "heavy" material. Because of this we can not make large overhangs (like arms for example). It is also difficult to make high verticals. A sand sculpture most obey the laws of physics.
How long can a sand sculpture stand up?
Depending of the sculpture is standing indoor or outdoor a sculpture can stand from a couple of weeks up to several years. Outdoor we have the influence of the weather, but it is possible to keep a sculpture "good" for 2 till 3 months. Indoor where there are no weather influences it is possible to keep a sculpture a much longer time, even years. The biggest problem for a sculpture is the public, who doesn't believe it is only sand and start touching the sculpture. A sculpture will be damaged more by the public then by the weather conditions.
Can you use any kind of sand?
Every professional sculptor can work with any kind of sand. However the composition of the sand got his influence on the quality if the sculpture. When we make a sculpture we preferably use young river sand. This sand contains grain which are bigger and more angular. The grains stick better together and are easier to stack.
